Competencies/ Objectives

  • Participants will be able to determine best practice for those who are grieving.
  • Participants will be able to identify strategies to use in the workplace in order to incorporate humor as an integral part of the cultural health of the organization.
  • Participants will be able to describe the possible impact of stress on the brains of adults.
  • Participants will be able to define several ways to cope with stress.
  • Participants will be able to identify the benefits of humor and laughter therapy for patients undergoing medical treatment.
  • Participants will be able to integrate strategies using humor in the treatment of mental illness including depression and stress disorders.

 

Faculty:

Mary Kay Morrison is the host for this program, an educator who has taught at virtually every level of the educational spectrum: facilitating keynote presentations and workshop sessions for the past 30 years.  She is president of AATH (the Association of Applied and Therapeutic Humor) and was the founder of the AATH Humor Academy Certified Humor Professional (CHP) graduate studies program. Her book, “Using Humor to Maximize Living” is the text for numerous college courses. Mary Kay has written extensively on the top 10 benefits of humor. Her work on the links between neuroscience and learning can be found in numerous education publications.  Ms. Morrison has been a university commencement speaker; a guest on talk radio shows and has served on various Illinois State Board of Education  “train the trainer” teams.

Kelly Epperson is a former IRS agent, now an agent of joy, who delivers keynotes and trainings/workshops/retreats internationally on Science of Happiness, Stress Management, The Impact of Happiness on Health and Wealth, Vibrational Energy Medicine, Creating Your Own Joy, Joy & Writing, and Birth That Book.  Kelly has ghostwritten 30+ books and has authored several books of her own, including When Life Stinks, It’s Time to Wash the Gym Clothes; 365 Days of Joy; The Journey to Joy; and Joy Droppings.

Debra Joy Hart is a nurse case management nurse consultant and healthcare educator in Champaign, IL. She has over 30 years in clinical practice working in hospice, Alzheimer’s mental health and long term care settings. Ms. Hart is a Certified Bereavement Facilitator and Certified Laughter Leader and juggles her skills as a nurse, humorist, clown and lay minister to speak at local, state and national conferences and programs.

Katherine Puckett is the Director of Mind-Body Medicine of CTCA at the Midwestern Regional Medical Center.   Dr. Puckett is a licensed clinical social worker. She earned a PhD from the University of Chicago and a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University. Dr. Puckett has been a practitioner for over 35 years, with experience in human services addressing the needs of vulnerable populations who have sustained major losses. Her broad-based professional background includes leadership positions in social services and healthcare, with additional experience as a clinician and researcher.
